Adapting to Wireless
One of the newest of the Microsoft Xbox wireless adapter series is the MN-740 Xbox wireless adapter. $139 retail, the device is extremely easy to setup and works with other gaming devices besides the Xbox. You don’t need any Web configuration, although any upgrades of firmware require a computer. This particular Microsoft Xbox wireless adapter does not come with WPA support.
If you have a game console or any other Ethernet port enabled device that you want to connect to a WLAN or unwire this new Microsoft Xbox wireless adapter is ideal. Based on a chipset by Atheros and mimicking the motif of Xbox, the MN-740 has a black plastic chassis that is very low profile. Its short antenna is capable of rotating 180 degrees although it still comes fixed to the Xbox 360 unit.
You don’t even need a computer for the pre-configuration. With the CD that is included with the Microsoft Xbox wireless MN-740 adapter all of its configuration and setup is accomplished on the Xbox console. Documentation is detailed and clear, as is the case with any other Microsoft Xbox wireless adapter that came before. The manual is well written. It is printed and also includes a fold-out quick start placard that is tough and bendable.
Once you have your Microsoft Xbox wireless adapter configured, all you have to do is power up the Xbox unit while the install CD is in its drive. All you have to keep in mind is that when the software upgrade loads it could overwrite any modifications or customizations you’ve written into your software. In fact, if the Xbox stays connected to the Web, its new Microsoft wireless adapter will periodically and automatically download any available upgrades.
The MN-740 can be used with either an 11b or 802.11 g access point. You can also use the adapter for your PlayStation 2 if you’re one of those fanatic game players that have to have both.
